About Maple & Shore

A reference site for kayaking and canoe touring routes across Canada, covering flatwater lake systems, moving-water rivers, gear selection, and safety practices.

What This Site Covers

Maple & Shore focuses on practical route information for paddlers planning multi-day canoe and kayak touring trips in Canada. Articles cover three broad topics: route descriptions with portage notes and access details, gear selection structured as checklists for specific trip types, and safety considerations for flatwater and moving water environments.

Content is written for paddlers who already have basic boat-handling skills and are planning trips beyond day excursions. The site does not cover whitewater competitions, racing, or ocean crossings, though some moving-water safety content overlaps with river touring.

Scope and Regions

Primary coverage focuses on Ontario and Quebec, where the density of established canoe routes is highest. Specific regions covered include:

  • Algonquin Provincial Park canoe route network (Ontario)
  • French River and Georgian Bay area (Ontario)
  • La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve (Quebec)
  • BC coast and Desolation Sound area (British Columbia)
  • Yukon River corridor (Yukon Territory)

Coverage expands as additional route research is completed. Routes outside Canada are not included.

Content Standards

Route information draws on publicly available sources including provincial park websites, Parks Canada documentation, and topographic data from Natural Resources Canada. Gear specifications reference manufacturer published data and widely used standards such as those from Transport Canada for lifejacket and safety equipment requirements.

Where conditions change seasonally — portage trail states, campsite availability, access road status — articles include a last-updated date. Readers should verify current conditions with the relevant park authority before departing.

Updates

Articles are reviewed and updated at least once per year, typically at the end of each paddling season (October–November). Significant regulation changes or access closures are updated as information becomes available. The footer of each article displays the most recent update date.
